What a lawyer or broker needs to know about taxes

1

Register your practice with VID

Legal services and brokerage for a fee are economic activity. Registration with the tax office (VID) is free, online via EDS; you can choose the general regime or the micro-enterprise tax (MUN).

2

Large, irregular deals

A broker's commission may land once every two months — the VSAOI rules allow for that: you pay for months when income reaches the minimum wage, and just 10% for pension insurance in the rest.

3

The VAT threshold — €50,000

With large commissions the VAT-registration threshold approaches fast. Vadi tracks your 12-month turnover and warns you before it's crossed.

What Vadi does for you

You work with clients and deals — Vadi keeps the books in the background.

Invoices with a contract number

Issue an invoice referencing the contract, with your business details and logo — in Latvian or English. The system tracks numbering and payment.

Practice expenses tracked

Office rent, professional insurance, database subscriptions, travel to deals — drop in an invoice or snap a receipt, the fields fill in by themselves.

VAT threshold watchdog

Vadi tracks your turnover and warns you before the €50,000 threshold — so VAT registration doesn't come as a surprise after a good year.

Contributions & annual return

The quarterly social-contribution (VSAOI) report and the annual income declaration (D3) — computed from your records, ready to file in EDS. The calendar reminds you of deadlines.

MUN or the general regime

With low expenses MUN is simpler; if you keep an office and insurance, the general regime can be cheaper. Compare in the calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What taxes does a self-employed lawyer or broker pay?

Under the general regime: social contributions (VSAOI) of 31.07% on a chosen base (at least the minimum wage of €780 if your monthly income reaches it) plus 10% for pension insurance on the excess, and in the annual declaration personal income tax (IIN) of 25.5% on profit after deducting paid VSAOI. The alternative is the micro-enterprise tax (MUN) of 25% of turnover with no expense deduction.

My commissions come in irregularly — how does that affect VSAOI?

Social contributions (VSAOI) of 31.07% are paid for the months in which income reaches the minimum wage (€780); in the other months — 10% of actual income for pension insurance. In the quarterly report it all has to be split correctly by month — Vadi works that out automatically.

Do professional insurance and an office lower my tax?

Yes — under the general regime professional liability insurance, office or room rent, legal-database subscriptions and travel to deals are business expenses deducted from income.

When do I have to register for VAT?

When your transactions total €50,000 over 12 months. After registration, legal services and brokerage attract VAT at the standard rate — 21%. Vadi tracks your turnover and warns you in time.

How much does Vadi cost for a lawyer or broker?

From €9/month (incl. VAT) — invoices in LV/EN, income and expense tracking, VSAOI and income-tax calculations, the annual declaration and the tax calendar. The first 7 days are free and no card is required.

Vadi isn't only for lawyers. The same system works for every self-employed person and company in Latvia.
