What every self-employed person should know

1

Register economic activity with VID

If you regularly provide services or sell for payment, it's economic activity regardless of your field. Registration with the State Revenue Service (VID) is free and done electronically in EDS; you can pick the general regime or the micro-enterprise tax (MUN).

2

Choose your tax regime

If you have few expenses, MUN at 25% of turnover is simple. If you buy materials, equipment or services, the general regime with expense deduction is usually cheaper. Compare both in the calculator.

3

Keep proper records

All income must be declared, and documented expenses lower your tax. Clean records protect you from surprises in a VID review — and that's exactly what Vadi keeps for you.

What Vadi does for you

Whatever your field — Vadi calculates the taxes in the background.

Income tracking and invoices

Issue an invoice to a client in Latvian or English, or simply record income — cash, card or transfer. Your profit picture is always visible.

Expenses = a lower tax bill

Photograph a receipt or drop in an invoice — amount, date and supplier fill in themselves. In the general regime every expense reduces your taxable income.

A VAT watchdog

The €50,000 turnover threshold, EU transactions, foreign-service invoices with reverse-charge VAT — Vadi recognises these, shows them in the declaration and warns you in time.

Social contributions & annual declaration

The quarterly VSAOI report and the annual income declaration (D3) — calculated from your records, ready to file in EDS. The calendar reminds you of deadlines.

Work from your phone

Scan a receipt with the camera, log income between jobs, check how much tax you'll owe. No computer and no accountant needed.

Works for companies too

Not just the self-employed: invoices, payroll, VAT and the annual report for an SIA — the system tells you what to do and when, with the amounts already worked out.

How much tax will your income leave behind?

Enter your monthly income and expenses — the calculator shows the micro-enterprise tax and the general regime side by side with real figures. No sign-up.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to register economic activity if my field isn't on the list?

The list isn't a limit — what matters is how you work. If you regularly provide services or sell for payment, it's economic activity that must be registered with VID regardless of your field. Registration is free and done electronically in EDS.

What taxes does a self-employed person pay?

In the general regime: VSAOI social contributions at 31.07% of the chosen base (at least the €780 minimum wage when monthly income reaches it) plus 10% for pension insurance on the excess, and in the annual declaration personal income tax (IIN) at 25.5% of profit after VSAOI. The alternative is the micro-enterprise tax at 25% of turnover, without expense deduction.

MUN or the general regime — how do I choose?

It depends on your expenses. If you have almost none (say consulting or lessons), MUN at 25% of turnover is simple. If you buy materials, equipment or services, the general regime lets you deduct expenses and is usually cheaper. Compare both in our calculator with your own figures.

Does Vadi work for a company (SIA), not just the self-employed?

Yes. Vadi handles both self-employed accounting (MUN/IIN, VSAOI, D3) and SIA bookkeeping — invoices, expenses, payroll, VAT, the journal and the annual report. The system tells you what to do and when, with the amounts already calculated.

How much does Vadi cost?

From €9/month (incl. VAT) — income and expense tracking, VSAOI and IIN calculations, the annual declaration and a tax calendar. The first 7 days are free and need no card. Camera receipt scanning and bank-statement import are on the Pro plan.

There are dedicated guides too. For some industries we wrote a detailed page with exactly their nuances — see whether yours is among them.
